Samourai Wallet Review

What is Samourai Wallet?

Samourai Wallet presents itself as the most popular privacy wallet for Bitcoin. The Android mobile wallet, which is still in open testing, offers many privacy features.

Heads Up!

Large amounts of bitcoins should not be stored on your Samourai wallet! If you want the most secure Bitcoin wallet then you will need to use a hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano X or TREZOR T.

You should always do research before downloading or installing any Bitcoin wallet.

The wallet is only dedicated to BTC, not supporting altcoins. Samourai has been an alternative to other BTC wallets in the past couple of years. The wallet is full of innovative features, allowing it to work under any network conditions.

Protect Yourself with Samourai

Samourai still believes privacy should be inherent to using BTC. For that reason, the wallet supports alternating addresses. To boost security, the wallet uses the STONEWALL technology, which obscures metadata that allow third parties to identify related wallets.

Starting with Samourai Wallet

Starting with this wallet is as simple as downloading the app from the Google Store. Be careful to make certain you are using the right app. Counterfeited apps may mask themselves as wallets and steal any BTC sent to them.

Setting up a new wallet requires a three-fold protection. Make sure you have a pen and paper to create a copy of the passphrase, the PIN, but most importantly, the key generation phrase.

The Samourai wallet will prompt the user to copy the passphrase, best done on paper and not on a computer or through cloud services. The passphrase is used to derive the seeds, and can re-launch a wallet on another device.

Writing down the code, especially on different locations, is the perfect backup for the Samourai wallet.

Transact Privately

The wallet will then prompt the user to create a PayNym ID.

This special pseudonym allows users to have a reachable identity to share online, which however cannot be connected to a BTC address. This tool prevents a first-touch attack where one’s wallet can be identified and singled out for tracking.

Who Should Use the Samourai Wallet?

This wallet is suitable for intermediate or advanced BTC users, though new adopters can also try it out.

The mobile version competes with some of the easiest and most intuitive wallets. Storing small amounts of BTC on Samourai for everyday use is an option.

The mobile wallet is still in open testing phase, meaning glitches and problems are not ruled out.

Running a Full Node

Downloading Samourai Dojo offers a complete tool to run a node, thus having direct access to BTC transactions. Accessing nodes may vary based on connectivity. Using Samourai with a self-hosted node increases connectivity and security.

Running an offline node is an additional security and confidentiality feature. Samourai can propagate transactions outside the usual Internet infrastructure that connects Bitcoin nodes. Instead, the wallet is capable of using SMS or mesh networks to spend offline and propagate a transaction.

Additional Features

Samourai Wallet offers additional features to make transactions faster and cheaper. The wallet is SegWit enabled, allowing the Bech32 address format.

The Smart Miner Fees feature further breaks down transaction costs, by optimizing the inclusion into a block, without waiting too much and without overpaying. This feature also avoids the mistake of inadvertently paying too much in miner fees.

Samourai Wallet also allows batch transactions, connecting unrelated transfers into one wrapped transaction, to pay only a single miner fee.

Mobile Security Features

Samourai can be used offline, or in conjunction with offline hardware wallets. But as a mobile wallet, Samourai is inherently less secure when connected.

For that reason, additional features mask the app on the mobile screen, veiling its very presence. The PIN input screen is additionally scrambled to avoid guessing. The PIN is also not a fixed length, to avoid brute-forcing.

Remote SMS commands are an opt-in feature, which allows a user to disable the wallet through SMS, in case the mobile phone is stolen or lost. Upon the loss of the phone, the wallet can be then recovered through the 12-word seed phrase.

Samourai is Open Source

Unlike veiled source wallets, Samourai offers its full source code. Through the GitHub page, advanced users can view the checksums and verify that the wallet is not faked or maliciously replaced.

The team follows the open source ethos of creating software to serve the purpose of privacy. The goal of Samourai is to bring back freedom to Bitcoin usage. The team also views itself as disrupting current software models:

We are privacy activists who have dedicated our lives to creating the software that Silicon Valley will never build, the regulators will never allow, and the VC’s will never invest in. We build the software that Bitcoin deserves.

Samourai Support Team

The Samourai wallet is one of the few with a dedicated support team. Wallets are usually tailored to advanced users, and they are pretty merciless. The Samourai wallet is still experimental, and has also received the occasional bug report.

A dedicated support team may be able to troubleshoot some issues, especially related to viewing the balance. Over the years, Samourai has smoothed out some of the bugs reported. The Samourai wallet also responds to anonymous encrypted emails, for an extra layer of confidentiality.
