As in countless other jurisdictions around the world, scammers have taken advantage of Bitcoin's newness and the relative lack of mainstream knowledge regarding the cryptocurrency to defraud potential investors in Arkansas. Recently, the Arkansas Securities Commissioner filed a cease and desist motion against Vekx Global LLC. Vekx, which was purportedly operating from a location in Little Rock, had been fraudulently offering cryptocurrency mining investments and promising high returns at fixed rates. The Arkansas Securities Department received a number of complaints from investors who had not received the guaranteed returns.
Upon investigation, the Department found that Vekx had never even occupied the office in which it claimed to be doing business. Securities Commissioner Eric Munson reminded investors that "Promoters of fraudulent investments often go to great lengths to create the appearance of legitimacy. Investors should use due diligence to uncover and stay one step ahead of scams. Any time one is promised a guaranteed return on an investment, especially sounding too good to be true, it’s likely fraud.”
A more menacing scheme affected some Arkansans in late 2018, where innocent victims received emails threatening to detonate a bomb if a ransom was not paid to the extortionists in Bitcoin. The Arkansas Attorney General's office recieved a number of calls in relation to the threats, and cautioned recipients to contact police and avoid paying any ransom. The FBI opened an investigation into the matter and reported that it was part of a nationwide scam. It did not see the threats as credible, and no instances of any bombs being discovered or detonated were reported.
